Born in Montpellier, France towards 1295, St. Roque is said to have been found miraculously marked on the breast with a red cross at his birth.  His parents were killed when he was about twenty years old.  Since his father was governor of that city, he was left with much inheritance.  While in the guise of a mendicant pilgrim, he set out for Italy which was stricken by the plague. Before his journey, he gave his fortune away to the poor and the of Montpellier to his uncle.  Arriving in Italy, he devoted the his life to caring for the plague-stricken, curing them with the sign of the cross.  Everywhere he went, the terrible pestilence disappeared before his saintly presence and miraculous power.  He was also stricken with the plague, but according to legend, recovered,  with the help of a dog which brought him food and licked his wounds.

Roque returned to France and when he came back to Montpeller, he refused to reveal his identity to the authorities.  Stirring up much suspicion, he was presumed to be a spy disguising as a pilgrim.  He was arrested and imprisoned upon an order from his uncle, the governor.  He died in prison five years later in 1327.  The miraculous cross mark on his breast as well as documents found in his possession revealed his true identity.  He was then accorded with a civic funeral.  Numerous miracles worked through his intercession attested to his sanctity.
